Joining the Cathedral Choir

Bradford Cathedral Choir welcomes boys and girls who enjoy singing; and adult alto/tenor/bass singers with prior singing experience.
There is also a Cathedral Consort which provides opportunities for adult sopranos.

We are interested in hearing from parents of boys and girls aged between 7 and 10 who would like to find out more about membership.

Please read below for more details and do not hesitate to contact the Director of Music by email at alex.berry@bradfordcathedral.org, or by telephone on 01274 777732 / 07507 456741
to arrange to find out more.

The choir is a lively, enthusiastic, and friendly group which fosters a great sense of teamwork. Having a son or daughter who is a chorister is a commitment for the whole family but there are great rewards.

What does the choir offer?

  • Opportunities for boys and girls to sing as cathedral choristers, irrespective of family, educational, financial, or religious background.

  • The opportunity to receive a free, first-class musical education from our staff of professional musicians.

  • The prospect of perfoming in amazing places: the cathedral choir has sung in some of Britain's most famous buildings, including St. Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey.

  • The chance to take part in regular choir tours, both in the UK and abroad.

  • Opportunities to broadcast and record: the choir has released a number of CDs; and recent broadcasts include a carol service for BBC Radio Leeds, and television's "Songs of Praise".

  • Making friends and having fun: apart from singing, the choristers regularly enjoy other activities, such as trips to the cinema, bowling, football and days out.

Belonging to the cathedral choir is a deeply worthwhile activity. Bradford Cathedral has produced many successful musicians. Whatever they go on to do in later life, membership of the cathedral choir helps to develop crucial life-skills, such as self-discipline, initiative, teamwork and the ability to work to high standards.

When does the choir sing?

After an initial period of training as 'probationers', choristers attend several times each week, as outlined below. A high level of attendance is expected: this ensures your child is able to benefit fully from all that is on offer, and that the cathedral choir is able to flourish and succeed - our choristers thrive on the rewards this level of commitment brings.

Bradford Cathedral choristers benefit, free of charge, from a programme of individual and group tuition worth over £1500 per year per child. The costs of tuition and music exam resources are covered by the cathedral. We are immensely grateful to the Friends of Cathedral Music and the Liz & Terry Bramall Foundation for the financial support they give to the cathedral's music programme.

The Cathedral Consort (adult sopranos, choral scholars, and lay clerks) sings the Choral Eucharist for the third Sunday of each month, and for occasional feast day services and concerts.

Adult singers with prior singing experience and good sight-reading ability are encouraged to contact the Director of Music (details below) to find out more about the opportunities offered.
